Sustainable Meeting Place

When it comes to sustainability issues, we take a holistic view; it must be sustainable from an environmental, social, and economic perspective, both now and in the future. Even when Avion was first established, this was part of both our vision and the way the shopping center was built, and we have strived to create a gathering place that benefits Umeå.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL – We want to make it easy for you to travel to us sustainably by bus, bike, or car. This is made possible by a bus stop located right outside Entrance 3. We have 250 bike parking spaces and also offer charging stations for electric cars.

GREEN CONTRACTS – We have what are known as “Green Contracts” with all our tenants. Among other things, these contracts set requirements for the systems installed in the building to minimize energy consumption and heat generation, and they ensure that we work together to continuously reduce our environmental impact.

LED LIGHTING – Only LED lighting is used in all common areas. The “green” leases regulate the use of light sources, which in turn means that most tenants have LED lighting in their stores.

THE PLANT WALL – The large plant wall between Entrance 1 and Entrance 3 acts as a biological air purifier and sound absorber. The plant wall promotes well-being and contributes to a more natural and healthy indoor environment.

WATER CONSERVATION – All toilets and faucets at Avion are low-flush, and we have faucets that reduce water consumption.

WASTE SORTING – All waste from the property owner and tenants is sorted at the source, including corrugated cardboard, combustible waste, food waste, metal, glass, plastic, paper, electronic waste, and more. All food scraps from the restaurants are processed in a food waste disposer. Visitors can sort plastic, paper packaging, returnable bottles, and cans into the sorting bins at the center. As a visitor, you can also recycle your waste at Byten & Återköp at IKEA, or at the recycling station located at the roundabout on Marknadsgatan, behind Systembolaget.

RECYCLING – The environment was a priority right from the start of construction on the shopping center. 90% of all waste generated during construction was recycled. In the day-to-day operation of our shopping center, it is also important that we manage waste effectively in collaboration with our tenants. We monitor this on an ongoing basis.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY – All the heating and cooling used at Avion is generated on-site by a geothermal energy plant that draws the heat and cooling the building needs from boreholes in the ground. Through this on-site solution, we can guarantee the origin of the energy and provide heating and cooling that is entirely renewable.

RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY – The electricity used at Avion is certified by “Bra Miljöval” and is generated from wind power. This means that the electricity is produced with consideration for biodiversity and has very low greenhouse gas emissions.

Certificate

BREEAM-in-use is the Building Research Establishment’s international environmental certification system for existing buildings. Buildings are assessed based on waste, health and well-being, energy, transportation, water, resources, resilience, land use, and ecology and pollution. Avion Shopping has received an “Excellent” rating, which is the second-highest rating.

GREEN BUILDINGS is an annual building certification program that evaluates a building’s energy consumption. To receive the certification, the building must use 25% less energy than before or compared to the new construction requirements in the BBR. Regulatory requirements regarding the indoor environment—such as air quality and indoor thermal comfort—must also be reported to obtain the certification.

LEED GOLD is a global certification system designed to identify, implement, and measure environmentally friendly design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Avion has received GOLD certification, which is the second-highest rating and a mark of quality indicating that the entire construction process—from planning to the finished building—has taken people, the environment, and the surrounding community into account. This includes the choice of location, community engagement, selection of building materials, and resource consumption during construction, to name a few.
