Since its grand opening in 2016, the turnstiles at the entrance have been working hard to welcome the shopping center’s 39,957,714 visitors. 188,047 gift cards have been sold, and 292 events have been organized, where artists, idols, and local personalities have met their audiences. At the same time, Avion has become a workplace for hundreds of people and has played a major role in Umeå’s commercial development.
But of course, the numbers don't tell the whole story.
Avion has emerged as a gathering place—somewhere between everyday life and a celebration. It’s the place where people got their first summer jobs, where they bought their graduation outfits, a place where friends meet for coffee, and where families with children head to turn their weekly grocery run into a Saturday outing.
“We’ve seen how the space dedicated to brick-and-mortar retail has shrunk in recent years. Yet Avion remains—vibrant, ever-changing, and bustling with people. Being able to celebrate ten years is, of course, a big deal. It’s hard not to get swept up in the moment and feel a little nostalgic,” says Mia Eskilsson, center manager at Avion.
So much has happened over the past ten years. During the pandemic, Avion remained open and worked closely with both tenants and visitors to foster a sense of security during uncertain times.
At the same time, our sustainability efforts have continued to evolve. The geothermal energy plant, which provides the center with its own heating and cooling, was further enhanced in connection with the 12,000-square-meter expansion. Collaborations with local organizations and associations have also made a significant impact.
– I’d still go so far as to say that Avion has become more than just a place to shop. We’re part of Umeå’s pulse and growth—a sign that the future of retail won’t consist solely of clicks and transactions. Because even as we celebrate the past ten years, the thought of what it might be like here in another ten is just as exciting. By then, we’ll have developed the land next to MAX, maybe built a parking garage—or why not an Avion Arena?” laughs a dreamy Mia Eskilsson.
Avion is now celebrating its first decade with an anniversary celebration for the entire region.
“We’re celebrating the weekend of March 21–22 with lots of activities! Among other things, we’ll be serving a ten-meter-long birthday cake, handing out goodie bags to the first 200 visitors, and putting on a princess show for the kids. Plus, our stores have put together 54 wonderful anniversary discounts, so don’t miss out,” says an excited Mia.
The anniversary also brings news that many Umeå residents have been hoping for.
“At the same time, we’d like to congratulate Umeå! Avion will continue to be called Avion,” says Mia Eskilsson.
